About Gilbert

Gilbert, southeast of Phoenix, is a town in Arizona's Maricopa County and counts as a Phoenix suburb. With 287,285 residents in 2025, it ranks fourth among Arizona municipalities and is the nation's largest incorporated town by population. The town covers 178.35 km² (68.86 sq mi). William "Bobby" Gilbert gave land in 1902 so the Arizona Eastern Railway could lay track from Phoenix to Florence. Gilbert was incorporated on July 6, 1920, and was a farming town, supported by the railway, the Eastern and Consolidated Canals and the Roosevelt Dam. Between 1911 and the late 1920s it carried the title "Hay Capital of the World."

Gilbert Elementary School, built in 1913, houses the Gilbert Historical Museum and appears on the National Register of Historic Places. The town's tourism site points to mural-clad brick walls and a color-changing water tower. The Gilbert Arizona Temple was dedicated on March 2, 2014, and reflects a large local community of Latter-day Saints. Town Hall holds a 9/11 Memorial built around an eight-foot steel girder from the North Tower, unveiled on September 11, 2011. Because Gilbert is incorporated as a town rather than a city, it has less power to regulate utilities and construction.
