About Genoa
Genoa is the capital of Liguria, in northern Italy, and the sixth-largest city in the country, with 566,247 people within its administrative limits in 2026. It stands on the Gulf of Genoa, part of the Ligurian Sea, and has long ranked among the Mediterranean's most important ports; no port in Italy is busier. From the 11th century until 1797, a span of more than seven centuries, Genoa was the capital of a maritime republic counted among the most powerful. Petrarch nicknamed the city la Superba, "the superb one."
The Doge's Palace dates to 1284 and was turned into a Mannerist building late in the 16th century, and after a fire in 1777 its main façade was rebuilt in the Neoclassical style. The cathedral of San Lorenzo has a black-and-white striped façade; it was consecrated in 1118 and partly rebuilt in the Gothic style after a fire in 1296. The Strada Nuova dates from the mid-16th century, when it was laid out for Mannerist palaces of eminent families, and 42 Palazzi dei Rolli are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Lanterna tower, 77 m (253 ft) high, is a symbol of the city.
