About Parma
Parma lies in Emilia-Romagna, in Italy's north, and is known for architecture, music, art, food and the countryside around it. After Bologna, it ranks second among the region's cities by population, with 199,450 residents in 2026. A stream of the same name divides the city in two, and the district on the west bank is called Oltretorrente, which translates as the other side of the stream. The University of Parma, among the oldest universities in the world, is based there.
The cathedral was begun in 1090 and holds a sculpture from the 12th century by Benedetto Antelami and a dome fresco painted by Antonio da Correggio between 1526 and 1530. Beside it stands the baptistery, started in 1196 in pink Verona marble and also the work of Antelami. Correggio also frescoed the cupola of San Giovanni Evangelista, a landmark in illusionistic perspective ceilings, and that of the octagonal Santa Maria della Steccata. The Palazzo della Pilotta of 1583, partly destroyed in World War II, houses the Palatine Library, the National Gallery and the Farnese Theater.
