About Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi serves as capital both of the United Arab Emirates and of its own emirate, and ranks as the country's second-most populous city, behind Dubai. It occupies a T-shaped island that juts into the Persian Gulf off the central-western coast. The name means "Father of the gazelle." In 1761 a hunting party under Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa Al Nahyan found fresh water near the coast, and a settlement grew up there around a fort. On December 2, 1971, the emirate joined five others in founding the United Arab Emirates.

Katsuhiko Takahashi, a Japanese architect, planned the city in 1967 under the guidance of Sheikh Zayed, initially for 40,000 people. The central area is dense with medium- and high-rise buildings, and the financial districts usually hold the skyscrapers, such as Etihad Towers. The Aldar Headquarters is the Middle East's first circular skyscraper, and Emirates Palace takes its design from Arab heritage. The Maqta and Mussafah Bridges link the island to the mainland, and Zaha Hadid designed the Sheikh Zayed Bridge, which opened in late 2010.
