About Turku

Turku, the regional capital of Southwest Finland, lies on the country's southwestern coast at the River Aura's mouth. About 210,000 people live in the city and around 320,000 in the metropolitan area, and only Helsinki and Tampere have larger urban areas. Turku is Finland's oldest city. The earliest mention of the town of Aboa is in a bull of Pope Gregory IX from 1229, the year used as its founding year. Under Swedish rule it was Finland's most important city. In 1809 Finland became an autonomous grand duchy within the Russian Empire, and Turku was its capital until 1812, when Emperor Alexander I chose Helsinki instead.

Archaeological evidence dates the start of Turku's construction to the late 13th century. Few medieval buildings survive, mainly because of the Great Fire of 1827, which devastated three quarters of the city. The 13th-century Turku Cathedral is among the oldest buildings still in use, and it is the only medieval basilica church in Finland. Turku Castle was established in the 1280s and expanded several times in the 15th century. The oldest wooden house in Turku, Qwensel House, dates to the 18th century and has been turned into a museum.
