About Mumbai

Mumbai was officially Bombay until 1995. It is Maharashtra's state capital and India's financial capital, and it sits on the Konkan coast of western India with a deep natural harbor. The 2011 census counted almost 12.5 million people in the city proper, the most of any in India, and the metropolitan region has over 20 million. Mumbai began as an archipelago of seven islands. The Portuguese received them in 1535, they passed to the British Crown in 1661, and the East India Company leased them in 1668. The Hornby Vellard project began in 1782, and the reclamation work finished in 1845 joined the islands.

The city's architecture mixes Gothic Revival, Indo-Saracenic and Art Deco with other modern styles. Most British-period buildings, such as Victoria Terminus and the University of Mumbai, are Gothic Revival and mix European touches like German gables and Dutch roofs with traditional Indian features, while the Gateway of India is Indo-Saracenic. Art Deco landmarks line Marine Drive and stand west of the Oval Maidan, and only Miami has more Art Deco buildings. Construction lulled from the mid-1990s and then accelerated after 2000, once the Lower Parel area started to develop; limited land resources and fast population growth are the main reasons the city builds upward.
