About Atlanta
Atlanta is Georgia's capital and its most populous city. Fulton County's seat is Atlanta, which also extends into neighboring DeKalb County. The city had 498,715 residents at the 2020 census. It sits in the Appalachian foothills at about 300 m (just over 1,000 feet) above sea level, with rolling hills and the densest urban tree coverage among major U.S. cities. Atlanta began as the end of a major railroad sponsored by the state, soon became the convergence point of several lines, and its name comes from the largest of them, the Western and Atlantic Railroad.
Most of the city burned during the last months of the Civil War, which depleted its stock of historic architecture. Because the city developed later, many landmarks resemble buildings in the Northeast or Midwest. In the late 20th century Atlanta embraced modern architecture, and John Portman designed most of the buildings that shape the downtown skyline, among them the Westin Peachtree Plaza. In the later 1980s it became an early home of postmodern buildings with classical elements, and many of its tallest skyscrapers date from then. Bank of America Plaza, which dates to 1992, rises 312 m (1,023 ft).
