About Buffalo
Buffalo lies in western New York, on Lake Erie's eastern shore where the Niagara River begins, on the border between Canada and the United States. It is the seat of Erie County, and the 2020 census counted 278,349 residents. Metropolitan Buffalo, which counts over 1.23 million residents, is New York State's second largest metro area, after New York City. The city was chosen in 1825 as the Erie Canal's terminus, was incorporated in 1832, and grew into the principal inland port linking the Great Lakes with the Atlantic; transshipment made it the largest grain port in the world in that era.
Buffalo holds a wide range of nineteenth- and twentieth-century buildings. Downtown has the Guaranty Building by Louis Sullivan, an early skyscraper, and the Ellicott Square Building, once among the largest of its kind worldwide. Downtown also holds the Art Deco City Hall and the McKinley Monument. The Central Terminal opened in 1929 in Broadway-Fillmore, and the Richardson Olmsted Complex, finished in 1881, housed an insane asylum until the 1970s. Redevelopment from the 1950s into the 1970s left Seneca One Tower, the tallest in the city, and the Brutalist City Court Building. In Parkside, Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Darwin D. Martin House in his Prairie School style.
