About Dallas

Dallas is a city in northern Texas and the seat of Dallas County. It ranks ninth among U.S. cities by population and third in Texas, with 1.3 million residents at the 2020 census. The Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, which Dallas anchors with Fort Worth, is the country's fourth-most populous metropolitan area, with 8.5 million people. John Neely Bryan came back in 1841 and founded a permanent settlement called Dallas, and the city was incorporated on February 2, 1856. Four major interstate highways converge in Dallas, and railroads, highways and an international airport helped it become a major inland port.

Twenty buildings on the Dallas skyline count as skyscrapers, each taller than 150 m (490 feet). Some older buildings come from the late 1800s and the early twentieth century, such as the 15-story Praetorian Building of 1909, one of the earliest skyscrapers west of the Mississippi, but most notable architecture is modernist or postmodernist. Reunion Tower and Dallas City Hall, by I. M. Pei, are modernist, while Fountain Place and Bank of America Plaza are postmodernist skyscrapers. Swiss Avenue has historic houses from Victorian to neoclassical, and the Dallas Downtown Historic District protects commercial buildings dating from the 1880s through the 1940s.
