About Bilbao
Bilbao lies in northern Spain and is the biggest city in both Biscay province and the Basque Country, an autonomous community. Its 2024 population was 347,342, making it Spain's 11th most populous city. It lies about 16 kilometers (10 mi) from the Bay of Biscay, on its southern side, with two small mountain ranges around its main urban core. Diego López V de Haro founded it in the late 13th century, and a port exporting wool and iron from Biscayan quarries made it a commercial hub. Heavy industrialization in the nineteenth century and the early twentieth made it the center of the second-most industrialized region of Spain, behind Barcelona.
In its early days Bilbao had only three streets behind walls. A major fire in 1569 and several floods preceded the demolition of the walls in 1571, which let the town expand. After Bilbao annexed Abando in 1876, a new ensanche was planned with the Gran Vía as its main thoroughfare. The estuary within the city is crossed by seventeen bridges, among them the pedestrian Zubizuri, which Santiago Calatrava designed and which opened in 1997. Since the 1990s, many old industrial districts have become spaces designed by internationally known architects, notably the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which Frank Gehry designed for a site of former docks.
