About Birmingham

Birmingham, a city and metropolitan borough, sits in the center of England's West Midlands region. The city proper had 1.2 million people in 2025, making it Britain's second-largest city. It is considered the social, cultural, financial and commercial center of the Midlands, and it is the country's most inland major city. Only small rivers, mainly the Tame, flow through it, but its many canals are known as the Birmingham Canal Navigations. In medieval times Birmingham was a Warwickshire market town, and it expanded through the 18th century alongside the Midlands Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.

Because Birmingham's growth began in the Industrial Revolution, relatively few buildings from earlier periods survive, and those that do are protected, with 1,946 listed buildings and thirteen scheduled monuments. St Martin in the Bull Ring is the original parish church, and surviving Georgian buildings include St Philip's Cathedral, Soho House, and the Town Hall. The Victorian era brought extensive building, including the Victoria Law Courts, in red brick and terracotta, and the Council House, along with miles of redbrick terraces. Postwar redevelopment replaced dozens of Victorian buildings, often with brutalist architecture.
