About Woodstock

Woodstock, a market town and civil parish in West Oxfordshire, England, lies 13 km (8 miles) north-west of Oxford. The 2021 census recorded 3,521 residents in the parish. A steep valley carries the River Glyme through the town and divides New Woodstock from Old Woodstock. The name is Old English and means a clearing in the woods, and the Domesday Book of 1086 describes the place as a royal forest. Henry II granted the town a market charter in 1179. Glove-making brought prosperity from the 16th century, and by 1720 its fine steelwork trade was thriving.

John Vanbrugh designed Blenheim Palace, beside the town, in a heavy Italo-Corinthian style. The manor was given in perpetuity to the first Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, to honor his 1704 victories at Blenheim, and a mostly ruined earlier manor was demolished for the project. In 1987, UNESCO listed the palace as a World Heritage Site. In the town, the almshouses date from 1798, Woodstock Town Hall (1766) follows designs by Sir William Chambers, and the Bear Hotel on Park Street dates from the 13th century.
