About Cardiff

Cardiff, Wales's capital and largest city, ranks eleventh in size among the cities of the United Kingdom; its population was 381,516 in 2025. It lies in the southeast of Wales, within the Cardiff Capital Region, and is also the county town of historic Glamorgan. Until the early 19th century it remained a small town, and mining in the region helped it expand as a port for coal. It was ranked as a city in 1905 and proclaimed capital of Wales in 1955. It is Wales's main commercial center and home to the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament.

Cardiff Castle stands in the heart of the city center, and the city claims a castle concentration no other city in the world can match. To the north, Castell Coch, a folly by William Burges for the Marquess, is lavishly decorated and dates from the 1870s; it rests on the foundations of a much older medieval castle. The Edwardian buildings of Cathays Park include the City Hall, the National Museum and Gallery of Wales, the Crown Court and university buildings around Queen Alexandra Gardens. Since 2000 the city's building heights have changed markedly, with its first high-rise apartments. The city has more than 1,000 listed buildings.
