About Liverpool

Liverpool, a port city, is a metropolitan borough in Merseyside, England. It lies 178 miles (286 km) northwest of London, on the Mersey Estuary's eastern side near the Irish Sea. Its estimated population was 507,915 in 2025. Established as a borough in 1207, it gained significance from the late 17th century. The port brought in cotton for the textile mills of Lancashire and was a main departure point for emigrants from England and Ireland heading to North America. In the 19th century it was a leader of the Industrial Revolution and gained global economic importance, and city status followed in 1880.

Liverpool's long commercial history produced a wide variety of architectural styles, from 16th-century Tudor buildings to contemporary architecture, and most of its buildings were put up in or after the late 18th century. The city has over 2,500 listed buildings, 27 of them Grade I listed, and English Heritage described it as England's finest Victorian city. Liverpool has two cathedrals. The Anglican Cathedral took from 1904 to 1978 to build and is the largest cathedral in Britain, while the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral, built between 1962 and 1967, was among the first to break with the traditional longitudinal design.
