About Manchester

Manchester, in North West England, is both a city and a metropolitan borough, at the center of Greater Manchester. Over 589,000 people lived there in 2024, and it sits within the Built-up Area of Greater Manchester, home to 2.87 million people. The Cheshire Plain lies south of the city, the Pennines border its northern and eastern sides, and Salford adjoins it on the west. Manchester grew from a civilian settlement beside the Roman fort of Mamucium, established around AD 79 near where the rivers Medlock and Irwell meet. Textile manufacturing boomed during the Industrial Revolution, and the town began to expand significantly; it gained city status in 1853.

Manchester's buildings range from Victorian to contemporary styles, and red brick is widely used, reflecting the city's days as a global center for the cotton trade. Many former cotton mills stand just outside the city center; some have been left almost untouched since closing, while many were redeveloped as apartments and offices. Manchester Town Hall, in Albert Square, is a Gothic Revival building. Several skyscrapers date from the 1960s and 1970s, among them the CIS Tower, which held the height record until the Beetham Tower was finished in 2006.
