About Detroit
Detroit is Michigan's most populous city, standing on the Detroit River opposite the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario. Among U.S. cities it ranks 26th in population, and it is the largest on the border with Canada; the 2020 census counted 639,111 residents. The seat of Wayne County, it is known for what it has given to music, art, architecture and design, and for its automotive and industrial past. French explorers founded Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit in 1701, and by 1920 the growing automotive industry had pushed its population to fourth-largest in the nation.
Detroit's waterfront mixes architectural styles. Ally Detroit Center's spires, postmodern and Neo-Gothic in design, nod to the Art Deco skyscrapers of the city, and together with the Renaissance Center they give Detroit a distinctive skyline. Art Deco examples include the Guardian and Penobscot Buildings downtown, and Cadillac Place and the Fisher Building in New Center. Beyond the high-rises of Downtown and New Center, much of Detroit is low-rise buildings and single-family homes. The National Register of Historic Places lists 42 significant structures in the city. Little Caesars Arena, Comerica Park and Ford Field are among its downtown redevelopment projects.
