About London, Ontario

London lies in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, on the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor, and had 422,324 residents at the 2021 census. The city stands where the North Thames River joins the Thames River, about 200 kilometers (120 mi) from Toronto and the same distance from Detroit. It is politically separate from Middlesex County but remains its county seat. In 1793 John Graves Simcoe proposed the site as a capital for Upper Canada and gave the settlement and river the names of London and the Thames in England. European settlement began between 1801 and 1804, the village dates from 1826, and it was incorporated in 1855.

London's first dwelling was a tavern put up in 1826. On April 13, 1845, fire swept through the town, then largely built of wood, and destroyed 150 buildings across nearly 12 hectares (30 acres); it was the first million-dollar fire in the province. Most were rebuilt by 1846, when the town's brick buildings included a jail, a court house and large barracks. The Crystal Palace Barracks, built in 1861, was a brick octagon that had eight doors and forty-eight windows. The Blackfriars Street Bridge of 1875 was the city's first iron bridge, and its wrought iron bowstring arch through truss design is rare.
