About Cleveland
Cleveland sits on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Ohio, United States, and serves as the seat of Cuyahoga County. Surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company established the settlement on July 22, 1796, close to the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, and named it for their leader, General Moses Cleaveland. A position on both the river and the lake helped it become a large commercial and industrial center by the late 19th century. Cleveland is a port city linked to the Atlantic Ocean by the St. Lawrence Seaway, and no other city on Lake Erie has as many residents.
Government and civic buildings such as City Hall, the Cuyahoga County Courthouse and the Cleveland Public Library are grouped near the open Cleveland Mall in a neoclassical style they all share. The 1903 Group Plan produced them in the early twentieth century, and they rank among the most complete City Beautiful designs. The Terminal Tower, completed in 1927, is a Beaux-Arts skyscraper and was the city's tallest building until 1991. Key Tower and 200 Public Square mix Art Deco elements with postmodern designs. The five-story Cleveland Arcade dates from 1890.
