About Hamilton

Hamilton, a port city in Ontario, lies within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, about 68 kilometers (42 mi) southwest of Toronto. The 2021 census counted 569,353 residents. George Hamilton conceived the town after he bought the Durand farm soon after the War of 1812, and it grew into the center of the densely populated, industrialized Golden Horseshoe on Lake Ontario's western end. A canal cut through the outer sand bar in 1832 let Hamilton become a major port, and it gained city status on June 9, 1846. Steel and heavy manufacturing long led its economy, and the steel companies Stelco and Dofasco date from 1910 and 1912.

Hamilton wraps around Lake Ontario's westernmost part, and most of the city, including downtown, lies on the south shore. Hamilton Harbour marks its northern limit, and the Niagara Escarpment runs through the middle of the city, bisecting it into upper and lower parts. Prominent buildings of the late 19th century include the Grand Lodge of Canada from 1855, West Flamboro Methodist Church from 1879, the Right House department store from 1893 and a public library from 1890. The Pigott Building, completed in 1929, was the city's first high-rise, and the James N. Allan Skyway over Burlington Bay opened in 1958.
