About Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is the county seat of Allegheny County, in southwestern Pennsylvania. It stands where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to form the Ohio River, and its 302,971 residents at the 2020 census made it the state's second-most populous city after Philadelphia. It is called the Steel City for the dominant part it played in U.S. steelmaking history, and it is sometimes known as the City of Bridges because it has 446 of them. Since the 1990s the city has turned toward healthcare, education and technology. It also hosted the G20 summit in 2009.

Downtown, known as the Golden Triangle, is ringed by four main areas, the East End, West End, North Side and South Side, which divide into 90 neighborhoods. Downtown has 30 skyscrapers, nine of them over 150 m (500 ft), and the U.S. Steel Tower is the tallest at 256 m (841 ft). The Firstside part of Downtown holds the PPG Place complex of Gothic-style glass skyscrapers. The North Side was the independent Allegheny City until it was annexed in 1907, and it has well-preserved 19th-century homes. On the South Side, the South Side Works steel mill site was redeveloped in the 1990s as a mixed-use district.
