About Osaka

Osaka lies in the Kansai region of Honshu, Japan, and is a designated city. It is also the capital and most populous city of Osaka Prefecture, with an estimated 2.8 million residents and roughly 12,505 residents per square kilometer. Among Japanese cities proper, only Tokyo's special wards and Yokohama are larger, and Osaka is the largest part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area, which is Japan's second largest. People traditionally saw Osaka as Japan's economic hub. It had grown into an important regional port by the Kofun period (300–538) and briefly served as the imperial capital in the seventh and eighth centuries.

The sprawling cityscape has been called a showcase of Japan's urban phenomenon, second only to Tokyo. Older architecture includes the main shrine of Sumiyoshi Taisha, a national treasure, and Shitennō-ji, a Buddhist temple counted among the oldest in Japan. Its modern architecture includes buildings around Umeda, on Nakanoshima and around Osaka Castle, and several are Important Cultural Properties or registered tangible cultural properties, among them the Osaka City Central Public Hall. In the postwar period the city played a part in redevelopment, urban planning and zoning standards.
