About Beijing

Beijing is the capital of China, in the north of the country, and is run as a provincial-level municipality with 16 districts. Hebei Province surrounds most of it, and Tianjin Municipality lies to the southeast; the three together form the Jing-Jin-Ji cluster. More than 21.8 million people live in Beijing, the most populous national capital in the world. Its recorded history spans over three millennia, and it is the last one left among China's Four Great Ancient Capitals. Mountains encircle the inland city on three sides, which, with its ancient fortifications, left it well placed to become the emperor's residence.

Three architectural styles predominate in urban Beijing. One is traditional imperial architecture, seen in Tian'anmen (the Gate of Heavenly Peace), the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Another is the boxy "Sino-Sov" style, dating from the 1950s to the 1970s. The third is modern architecture, most visible in the Beijing CBD, where the CCTV Headquarters won the CTBUH Skyscraper Award in 2013 as the year's best overall tall building. Siheyuans, courtyards ringed by buildings, are linked by narrow alleys called hutongs. These generally run east to west, so doorways open to the north and south, which is good Feng Shui.
