About Kyoto
Kyoto, in Japan's Kansai region on Honshu, is the capital of Kyoto Prefecture. It had 1.46 million residents in 2020, ranking ninth among Japanese cities by population. More than half of the prefecture's people (56.8%) live in the city, and Greater Kyoto holds approximately 3.8 million. In 794 Emperor Kanmu chose the site as the new seat of the imperial court, and Japan's emperors ruled from Kyoto for eleven centuries, until the court moved to Tokyo. The modern municipality dates from 1889. Because the city was spared large-scale destruction in World War II, most of its prewar cultural heritage has been preserved.
The original city, Heian-kyō, was laid out in the pattern of the Chinese capital Chang'an, with the Imperial Palace facing south, and streets in wards such as Kamigyō-ku and Nakagyō-ku keep a grid layout. The Ōnin War of 1467–1477 caused extensive destruction, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi rebuilt the city in the late 16th century, doubling the count of north–south streets in the center and replacing ancient square blocks with rectangular ones. Roughly 2,000 temples and shrines stand in the city. Late Meiji public buildings took on European and American design, and the Kyoto National Museum (1895) is in a French Second Empire style.
