About Seoul

Seoul, formally named Seoul Special Metropolitan City, is South Korea's capital and largest city. Its history goes back to 18 BC, when people of Baekje founded it, and under the Joseon dynasty it was officially made the capital. The Korean War left it mostly in ruins after Seoul changed hands four times. The city stands in mountainous, hilly terrain with Bukhansan on its northern edge. Its metropolitan area, which takes in Gyeonggi Province and Incheon, holds more than half of the country's people. Seoul itself had about 9.6 million residents in 2024, after a peak above 10 million.

Seoul was first planned as a capital city during the late 14th century, and under the Joseon dynasty the Five Grand Palaces were built there, all in the Jongno and Jung Districts. Changdeokgung was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and the main palace, Gyeongbokgung, went through a large restoration project. The Fortress Wall of Seoul dates from early in the Joseon era, and six of its original eight gates survive, including Namdaemun and Dongdaemun. The Cheonggyecheon stream, long covered with concrete, was restored in 2005. A surge in modern building added the 63 Building and the Lotte World Tower.
