About Palermo

Palermo is the largest city and the capital of Sicily, an autonomous island region in southern Italy, on a gulf of the same name that faces the Tyrrhenian Sea. Phoenicians founded it in 734 BC as Sis, meaning flower, and it later passed to Carthage. As Panormus it was part of the Roman Republic and the Empire for more than a thousand years. Arab rulers held it as part of the Emirate of Sicily between 831 and 1072. After the Norman conquest it became the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily, which lasted from 1130 to 1816. In 2026 the municipality had 626,273 residents.

Palermo's churches, palaces and other buildings range from Romanesque and Gothic to Baroque and Art Nouveau, and Arab-Norman Palermo, together with the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale, forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site centered on the city. The Quattro Canti, a small square where the ancient main roads cross, has corner buildings with diagonal baroque façades. The cathedral's heliometer dates to 1690: a tiny hole in a minor dome throws an image of the sun on the floor, which has a bronze line running north–south. The botanical garden, founded in 1785, is the largest in Italy.
