About Venice

Venice lies on the coast of northeastern Italy and is the capital of the Veneto region. The city stands on 126 islands that open water and canals keep apart, and 472 bridges connect portions of it. The islands sit in the Venetian Lagoon, a shallow enclosed bay. The municipality had 249,385 residents in 2026; nearly 50,000 live in the historical island city, most live on the mainland, and roughly 25,000 more live on other lagoon islands. Venice served as capital of the Venetian Republic from 810 until 1797, and it joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

Venice stands on unstable mud-banks, and its center was already crowded by the Middle Ages. The most prominent architectural style is Gothic, a local variant that pairs the Gothic lancet arch with the ogee arch and began in the 14th century; the Ca' d'Oro and the Doge's Palace are leading examples. Renaissance design caught on only from about the 1470s, the city kept much of the form of its Gothic palazzi, and the shift to Baroque was fairly gentle. As a result the buildings along the Grand Canal, though from very different periods, share a basic harmony.
