About Bologna

Bologna, in northern Italy, is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region and Italy's seventh most populous city. The Etruscans, who called it Felsina, held the site first, followed by the Celts, who called it Bona, and then the Romans, who called it Bonōnia. During the Middle Ages, when it was a free municipality and later a signoria, it ranked among the biggest European cities by population. Founded in AD 1088, the University of Bologna is the oldest university that has operated continuously. The city is an agricultural, industrial, financial and transport hub, and it hosts one of Europe's largest permanent trade fairs.

Bologna was one of the few large walled cities left in Europe until a large-scale urban renewal project in the late 19th century. Its historic center covers 142 hectares (350 acres), the second largest in Europe, and its central streets follow the grid of the Roman settlement. Of up to 180 medieval towers put up in the 12th and 13th centuries, no more than twenty remain, the most famous being the Due Torri. Some 38 kilometers (24 miles) of porticoes shelter the historic center, and UNESCO named them a World Heritage Site in 2021. San Petronio Basilica, built from 1388 to 1479, is still unfinished.
