About Siena

Siena stands in Tuscany, in central Italy, and is the seat of its province. With 53,180 residents, it ranks as Tuscany's 12th-largest city. Medieval Europe counted Siena as a significant city, tied to commerce and banking; it was a major banking center until the 13th and 14th centuries. Painters including Duccio di Buoninsegna and Simone Martini were born and worked there. The University of Siena, founded in 1240 as Studium Senese, is among the world's oldest universities in continuous operation. Twice a year, the city holds the Palio, a horse race run in Piazza del Campo.

Siena's historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains several 13th- and 14th-century buildings. The cathedral, or Duomo, was begun in the 12th century and is a masterpiece of Romanesque–Gothic architecture in Italy; its main façade was finished in 1380. Plans to enlarge the eastern transept would have created the largest basilica in the world at that time, but funds ran short, partly because of war and the Black Death, and the project was truncated. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo opens before the Palazzo Pubblico, which has the tall Torre del Mangia. The Gothic Palazzo Chigi-Saracini houses the Accademia Musicale Chigiana.
