About Florence
Florence is the capital of Tuscany, in Italy, and its most populous city, with 361,625 residents in 2026. It lies about 275 kilometers (171 mi) northwest of Rome. The city was a center for trade and finance in medieval Europe and among the wealthiest of its era, and many academics consider it the birthplace of the Renaissance. The powerful Medici family ruled it at times, and from 1865 to 1871 it was the Kingdom of Italy's capital. UNESCO named its historic center a World Heritage Site in 1982.
Most of Florence was built during the Renaissance, although its layout recalls the Roman era, when it was laid out as a garrison settlement. Medieval, Baroque, Neoclassical and modern styles also left traces. The cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, also called the Duomo, has a dome that Filippo Brunelleschi built, and together with the Palazzo Vecchio it dominates the skyline. Medieval walls from the 14th century enclose the center of the city. The Ponte Vecchio, with shops along its edges held up by stilts, is the one bridge in the city that came through World War II intact.
