About Portland, Oregon

Portland is the most populous city in Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest, where the Willamette and Columbia rivers meet. It had 652,503 residents at the 2020 census, and more than 2.54 million people live in its metropolitan area, almost half of Oregon's population. Chinookan peoples inhabited the area, and settlers of European origin came in the 1840s. A coin toss decided the name, and the city took it from Portland, Maine. During the 1800s Portland grew into a major port and a lumber center. A climate of dry, warm summers and rainy, cool winters suits roses, and the city has long been nicknamed the City of Roses.

Portland's cityscape draws much of its character from its bridges across the Willamette River downtown, several of them historic landmarks, and the city has carried the nickname Bridgetown for decades because of them. The Hawthorne Bridge (1910), the Steel Bridge (1912) and the Broadway Bridge (1913) are among downtown's most heavily used and are designated historic landmarks. The Burnside Bridge and the Ross Island Bridge were both built in 1926, the double-decker Marquam Bridge in 1966, and Tilikum Crossing opened in 2015. Farther north, a suspension bridge in the Gothic revival style, the St. Johns Bridge, dates to 1931. In 1888 Portland opened the West Coast's first steel bridge.
