About Inglewood
Inglewood sits in the southwest of Los Angeles County, California, within Greater Los Angeles. It belongs to the South Bay region, and Los Angeles International Airport lies just to its west. The 2020 U.S. census counted 107,762 residents. The area was developed after the Venice–Inglewood railway opened in 1887, and the city was incorporated on February 14, 1908. Within Southern California, Inglewood is a major center for professional sports, and several teams have played in its venues.
Architect Charles Luckman, the designer of Madison Square Garden as well, drew up the Forum, an indoor arena built in 1967 to recall the Roman Forum in Rome. The Lakers and the Kings left it for Staples Center in 1999. The Inglewood City Council voted 5–0 on February 24, 2015, to approve plans for a stadium with NFL capacity, later called SoFi Stadium. Construction began on January 13, 2016, and the stadium opened in 2020, replacing the horse racing track at Hollywood Park. The Clippers began playing at Intuit Dome in 2024.
