About Salt Lake City

Utah's capital and most populous city, Salt Lake City, is also the county seat for Salt Lake County. It had 199,723 residents at the 2020 census, while its metropolitan area is estimated at 1.3 million residents. Settlers led by Brigham Young founded the city in 1847, arriving in a semi-arid valley and setting about building a large irrigation network. It was first named Great Salt Lake City, and the word "Great" was dropped in 1868. Economic growth followed immigration, mining booms and the building of the first transcontinental railroad, and the city earned the nickname "The Crossroads of the West."

The street grid follows a compass plan that starts from Temple Square's southeast corner, which is the Salt Lake meridian's origin. Its blocks measure 660 feet on a side, with streets 132 feet wide between them, and they are the largest in the United States, which gives the city a unique sense of scale. Main Street, once the primary commercial avenue, anchors the historic core between the Salt Lake Temple and the City and County Building, built in 1894. When it was finished, the 1912 Walker Center stood taller than any building between Chicago and San Francisco.
