About Vancouver

Vancouver, in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, is the province's most populous city and a major city of Western Canada. It had 662,248 residents at the 2021 census, and Greater Vancouver counted 2.6 million that year, ranking behind only Toronto and Montreal among Canada's metropolitan areas. Indigenous peoples, among them the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh, settled the area over 10,000 years ago. The modern city grew out of Gastown, around a makeshift tavern built in 1867, and an agreement with the railway company Canadian Pacific led to the 1886 renaming as Vancouver. A large natural seaport on the Pacific made it a key link in trade.

Vancouver's approach to urban planning began in the late 1950s, when planners started encouraging high-rise residential towers in the West End, with strict setback and open-space rules to protect sight lines. Redevelopment of former industrial land at North False Creek and Coal Harbour followed from the mid-1980s, producing a compact urban core. The Vancouver Art Gallery occupies a neoclassical former courthouse built in 1906, and the Gothic-style Christ Church Cathedral opened in 1894. Edwardian buildings such as the Dominion Building (1907) and Sun Tower (1911) each held the British Empire's tallest commercial building title in their day.
