About San José

San José is the Bay Area's most populous city and the most populous in Northern California, and the thirteenth most populous in the United States. It lies in the Santa Clara Valley, on San Francisco Bay's southern shore, and is the seat of Santa Clara County government. It dates from November 29, 1777, when it was founded as the first city in the Californias, under the name Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, and it later became California's first state capital. The economic boom that followed World War II and the fast growth of its technology industry carried it from an agricultural center into an urbanized metropolitan area.

Downtown buildings stop at about 91 m (300 ft) because the district sits under the airport's final approach, and the limit relaxes with distance from the runway. Criticism of the city's architecture is broad, mostly aimed at redevelopment from the 1950s, when blocks of historic commercial buildings and homes were cleared. The Hotel De Anza, the Hotel Sainte Claire and the Downtown Historic District are exceptions, and the hotels are on the National Register of Historic Places. Civic buildings are bolder: the Children's Discovery Museum and the Tech Museum of Innovation use strong colors and unusual exteriors, and Richard Meier & Partners designed the City Hall that opened in 2005.
