About Raleigh

Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and, after Charlotte, its second-most populous city, as well as the seat of Wake County. It is the largest city of the Research Triangle, an area it shares with Durham and Chapel Hill, and it had 467,665 residents at the 2020 census. The city takes its name from Sir Walter Raleigh, who sponsored the lost Roanoke colony. The site was chosen in 1788 for a new capital, the city was incorporated in 1792, and the founding of Research Triangle Park in 1959 brought thousands of jobs in science and technology.

The city was planned from the start as a state capital. The original boundaries were set by the downtown streets North, East, West and South, and the grid set two main axes crossing at a central square, with another square at each corner, following a 1682 plan Thomas Holme made for Philadelphia. A fire destroyed the State House in 1831, and the new Capitol was completed in 1840 with quarried gneiss carried by the state's first railroad. Raleigh kept clear of major fighting during the Civil War and grew little for decades afterward. PNC Plaza, 164 m (538 ft) tall with 34 floors, is the tallest building in the city.
