About Charlotte

With 874,579 residents at the 2020 census, Charlotte is North Carolina's most populous city and the seat of Mecklenburg County. The city honors Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who became a British queen consort in 1761, and it was incorporated in 1768. Catawba people lived in the area before European settlers came in the 18th century. After the American Civil War, railroads made Charlotte a regional trading hub, and in 1910 it passed Wilmington as the state's biggest city. Bank of America, Honeywell and Truist Financial are headquartered there, and the city's financial institutions together make Charlotte the nation's second-largest banking center.

Charlotte grew at the crossing of two Native American trading paths: one ran north–south as part of the Great Wagon Road, while the other ran east–west along what became Trade Street. The crossing became the heart of Uptown, and surveyors marked out a grid of streets in 1770 for future development. Tryon Street, the former Great Wagon Road, honors William Tryon, who served as a royal governor in colonial North Carolina, and the intersection is formally called Independence Square. The city's first boom, after the Civil War, centered on cotton processing and railroads, and textile factories followed, beginning with the 1881 Charlotte Cotton Mill.
