About Charlottesville
Charlottesville is an independent city in Virginia and the seat of Albemarle County, which surrounds it, even though city and county are legally distinct. The 2020 census counted 46,553 residents. The city is named after Queen Charlotte, and a legislative act of Albemarle County established the town in 1762 on Three Notched Road, a trade route linking Richmond with the Great (Shenandoah) Valley. The metropolitan area also takes in Fluvanna, Greene and Nelson counties. Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe both made their homes in the area, and Jefferson founded the University of Virginia, which straddles the city's southwestern border.
Monticello, 5 km (3 miles) southeast of the city, was Jefferson's home and main plantation, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Academical Village of the university. Builders lent by Jefferson began work on Christ Episcopal Church, the city's first church, in 1820, and its congregation's present home dates from the early 1900s. The Charlottesville Factory, founded around 1820 to 1830, burned by accident during General Sheridan's 1865 raid. Rebuilt at once, it was called the Woolen Mills until it was liquidated in 1962.
