About Knoxville

Knoxville is the county seat of Knox County, Tennessee. It stands beside the Tennessee River in the Appalachian Mountains and is East Tennessee's largest city, with 190,740 residents in the 2020 census, which puts it third among Tennessee cities by population. Settled in 1786, it was the first capital of Tennessee, and William Blount named the territorial capital after Henry Knox. A railroad reached the city in 1855 and set off an economic boom, and the 1982 World's Fair, which it hosted, helped revive it. The flagship campus of the University of Tennessee is in the city, and the Tennessee Valley Authority is headquartered there.

Downtown Knoxville mixes architectural styles from many periods, starting with the hewn-log James White House of 1786 and reaching the Knoxville Museum of Art of 1990. Greek Revival, Victorian, Gothic, Neoclassical and Art Deco buildings all appear, and Market Square, Gay Street and Jackson Avenue hold many commercial buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Sunsphere, a steel truss tower 81 m (266 feet) tall, was put up for the 1982 World's Fair. More homes designed by the Victorian architect George Franklin Barber stand in Knoxville than anywhere else in the country.
