About Baltimore

Baltimore, or Baltimore City, is Maryland's most populous city. It had 585,708 residents at the 2020 census, and the Baltimore metropolitan area has 2.86 million. The Constitution of Maryland made it an independent city in 1851, and it sits under no county's jurisdiction. People of the Province of Maryland set up the Port of Baltimore in 1706 for the tobacco trade with Europe and founded the Town of Baltimore in 1729. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, built in 1830, reinforced its status as a transportation hub, and the Inner Harbor ranked second only to Ellis Island as a port of entry for immigrants.

Baltimore's architecture covers each period across more than two centuries, with work by architects such as Benjamin Latrobe and I. M. Pei. Latrobe drew up the neoclassical Baltimore Basilica (1806–1821), among the earliest Catholic cathedrals in the country. The Phoenix Shot Tower (1828) is 71.40 m (234.25 ft) tall and was the tallest building in the country until the Civil War. Tens of thousands of rowhouses line a street plan built on a grid and spokes; their brick and formstone facings give the city a distinct look. Oriole Park at Camden Yards opened in 1992 as a retro style baseball park and helped revive the Inner Harbor area.
