About St. Louis
St. Louis, an independent city in Missouri, sits near the meeting point of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. French fur traders founded it on February 14, 1764 and took its name from King Louis IX of France; it soon stood at the center of the French Illinois Country. The United States acquired the city in 1804 with the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century it grew into a major Mississippi port, and it ranked as the country's fourth-largest city from 1870 to the 1920 census. It broke away from St. Louis County in 1877, and 1904 brought the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics to the city.
The Gateway Arch, 630 feet tall, is the tallest monument built in the United States, and honors Thomas Jefferson and the city's role as a gateway to the West. Churches survive from before the Civil War, among them the Federal-style Old Cathedral, built 1831 to 1834, and Christ Church Cathedral, Gothic Revival. The Old Courthouse, completed in 1864, has a cast-iron dome. Thomas P. Barnett designed the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis in the Neo-Byzantine style, built from 1907 to 1914, and it holds one of the world's largest mosaic collections. Downtown gained postmodern towers in the 1970s and 1980s, including One Metropolitan Square.
