About Cincinnati
Ohio's third-most populous city, Cincinnati had 309,317 residents at the 2020 census and is the seat of Hamilton County. Settled in 1788, it lies north of the point where the Licking River meets the Ohio River, which forms the state line with Kentucky. The city is the economic and cultural hub of a tri-state metropolitan area of over 2.3 million people. It developed as an inland steamboat port placed between the Northern and Southern United States, and its German-speaking immigrants founded many cultural institutions. The city's incorporation came on March 1, 1819.
Many urban-core structures have survived for 200 years. Late in the 19th century, ambitious projects such as Cincinnati Music Hall and the Roebling Suspension Bridge led people to call the city the "Paris of America." Carew Tower and Cincinnati Union Terminal are other landmarks, and Queen City Square (opened January 2011) reaches 203 m (665 feet). A Serpentine Wall stands at Yeatman's Cove, and a second flood wall is built into Fort Washington Way, protecting downtown from flooding. In 1988 the Bicentennial Commons park gained an entrance sculpture by Andrew Leicester: four steamboat smokestacks, each topped with a winged pig.
