About Louisville
With the largest population of any Kentucky city, Louisville sits right on the Indiana state line. A city-county merger in 2003 gave it the same borders as Jefferson County, and the merged government is called Louisville Metro. The 2020 census counted 633,045 people in the balance area that makes up Louisville proper and 782,969 across the consolidated area. George Rogers Clark founded the city in 1778, and it was named for France's King Louis XVI. The nearby Falls of the Ohio were the single big barrier to river travel from the upper Ohio to the Gulf of Mexico, so the settlement began as a portage site.
Louisville's downtown business district stands just south of the Ohio River, southeast of the nearby Falls of the Ohio. Development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was driven by three big parks laid out on the city's outskirts in 1890. The architecture blends old and new: Old Louisville is the nation's largest historic preservation district made up solely of Victorian homes and buildings, and West Main Street's buildings form the biggest collection of cast iron facades outside New York's SoHo neighborhood. The KFC Yum! Center, a 22,000-seat venue, was completed downtown in 2010.
