About Nashville

Nashville, in Middle Tennessee on the Cumberland River, serves as Tennessee's capital and its most populous city, and the seat of Davidson County. It had 689,447 residents at the 2020 census. Named for Francis Nash, a Continental Army general, it was founded in 1779 while the land was still part of North Carolina. It grew quickly as a Cumberland River port and a 19th-century railroad center. Union forces took it in 1862, making it the first Confederate state capital to fall. A consolidated city-county government has run it since 1963, and it is a major hub of the music industry, country music above all.

The Life & Casualty Tower, finished in 1957, was Nashville's first skyscraper and set off a wave of downtown high-rise building. The AT&T Building, which locals call the "Batman Building," followed in 1994, and little was built downtown again until the mid-2000s. Two building booms since 2000, one before the Great Recession and one after, produced multiple high-rises, including many hotel towers and condominiums. The Music City Center convention center, 110,000 m² (1,200,000 square feet), opened in May 2013. A full-scale replica of the Parthenon holds a 42-foot sculpture of Athena Parthenos.
