About Indianapolis

Indiana's capital and most populous city, Indianapolis, also serves as the county seat of Marion County. It lies in the central till plain region of Indiana, on the White River's west fork. The 2020 census counted 887,642 people in the city proper, ranking it 16th among U.S. cities by population. In 1821 it was founded as a planned city to host the state government, and Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham platted it on a grid of 2.6 km² (one square mile). The National and Michigan roads, followed by the arrival of rail, helped secure its role as a major center of manufacturing and commerce.

The Indiana General Assembly chose the site in 1821 and adopted a plan from Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham for a 2.6 km² (one-square-mile) town centered on a traffic circle, which gave the city its "Circle City" nickname. After the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, 87 m (284 feet) tall, was dedicated in 1902, the city passed its first laws limiting building height, to keep the monument visible. Buildings in Indianapolis have used Indiana limestone as a signature material since the 1800s, including the Indiana Statehouse (1888). Salesforce Tower, which has 48 floors and was completed in 1990, reaches 214 m (701 feet) at its roof.
