About Anaheim

Anaheim lies in the north of Orange County, California, within the Greater Los Angeles area, and had a population of 346,824 at the 2020 census. Fifty German families from San Francisco founded it in 1857, buying land at $2 an acre from Juan Pacífico Ontiveros' rancho to grow grapes, and it was incorporated on March 18, 1876, becoming the second city incorporated in Los Angeles County. For 25 years the area was California's largest wine producer, until a vine disease struck in 1884 and the industry was gone within a year. It stayed largely agricultural until the opening of Disneyland on July 17, 1955.

Anaheim's city limits stretch across nearly the whole width of Orange County. Mid-20th-century tract houses fill the west, and downtown holds three mixed-use historic districts, of which the Anaheim Colony is the largest. South of downtown, a commercial center of regional importance known as the Anaheim–Santa Ana edge city takes in the Disneyland Resort, its theme parks, hotels and retail district. The Platinum Triangle is a redevelopment district around Angel Stadium. Anaheim Canyon is an industrial district, and the eastern third of the city is Anaheim Hills, a community that followed a master plan.
