About Glendale
Glendale is a Phoenix suburb in Maricopa County, Arizona, and it borders the state capital. The 2020 census counted 248,325 people. In the late 1800s the area was all desert. William John Murphy finished the Arizona Canal in 1885 to bring water to it, then formed the Arizona Improvement Company in 1887 to sell land and water rights lying south of the canal, which he called Glendale. To improve access he also built Grand Avenue, a diagonal road 18 miles (29 km) long, running from Phoenix to Glendale and on to the town of Peoria.
An exchange of right-of-way along Grand Avenue made possible a railroad between Prescott and Phoenix, and a beet sugar factory built in 1906 added to the town's growth, though it operated only until 1913. During World War II Thunderbird Field was built to train civilian pilots, while in 1941 the Army was working on a larger base, Luke Field. The population nearly doubled between 1950 and 1960. Arrowhead Towne Center opened in 1993. In the early 2000s State Farm Stadium and the Westgate Entertainment District, which houses Desert Diamond Arena, were established, and Loop 303, completed in 2011, increased industrial development.
