About Jerome
Jerome, a town in Arizona's Yavapai County, stands in the Black Hills. It dates from the late 19th century, occupies Cleopatra Hill with a view across the Verde Valley, and lies about 160 km (100 mi) north of Phoenix on State Route 89A, which links Sedona and Prescott. Copper mines made the town prosperous in its heyday, and in the 1920s it had more than 10,000 residents. The 2020 census counted 464 residents.
The town exists mostly because of two ore bodies, formed roughly 1.75 billion years ago. William A. Clark developed the United Verde Mine on the larger one, while James Douglas Jr. owned the United Verde Extension, or UVX, Mine, which relied on the other. The copper found near Jerome was among the richest ever discovered. When the ore ran out, the last mines shut in 1953, and the population shrank to under 100. Residents then turned to tourism and retail sales, and in 1967 Jerome gained National Historic Landmark status. The former Jerome High School complex holds many artists' galleries.
