About Prescott

Prescott is the seat of Yavapai County in Arizona and had 45,827 residents in the 2020 census. The Bradshaw Mountains lie to its south and the Sierra Prieta range to its west, and the city is in the Granite Creek watershed. Prescott was designated capital of Arizona Territory in 1864, lost that role to Tucson in 1867, regained it in 1877, and yielded it to Phoenix in 1889. Prescott has a history as a gold and silver mining town on the frontier, and its economy rests on tourism, especially tourism tied to that past, including a self-proclaimed "World's Oldest Rodeo" that has run continuously since 1888.

Territorial Governor John Noble Goodwin chose the town site, east of Granite Creek near several mining camps. The town was named for the historian William H. Prescott on May 30, 1864, at a public meeting, and 73 lots sold at auction on June 4. Downtown streets honor Goodwin and John A. Gurley, the earlier appointee who died before taking office. Several fires in the 20th century's first decade leveled the wooden town, and it was rebuilt in brick. Whiskey Row has numerous historic buildings, among them The Palace, which is Arizona's oldest restaurant and bar.
