About Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon National Park lies in northwestern Arizona and was the 15th site to be named a national park. Its heart is the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River's gorge, often counted among the world's wonders. The park covers 4,926.08 km² (1,217,262 acres) in Coconino and Mohave counties, and recreational visitors numbered more than 4.9 million in 2024. UNESCO designated the Grand Canyon a World Heritage Site in 1979, and the park turned 100 on February 26, 2019.

Several buildings in the park date from between 1904 and 1932. Brothers Ellsworth and Emery Kolb, both photographers, built Kolb Studio in 1904. Mary Jane Colter designed Hopi House in 1905, patterned on structures from the ancient Hopi settlement of Old Oraibi, and later Lookout Studio and Hermit's Rest, both completed in 1914. John Verkamp built Verkamp's Curios next to Hopi House in 1905. Desert View Watchtower, another Colter work from 1932, stands 21 m (70 ft) tall at the South Rim's far eastern end; it imitates the watchtowers of the Ancestral Puebloans, though its four levels make it significantly taller than the historical towers.
