About Flagstaff

Flagstaff serves as seat of government for Coconino County in Arizona and had 76,831 residents at the 2020 census. Its setting is the Colorado Plateau's southwestern margin, within the San Francisco volcanic field, beside the largest unbroken ponderosa pine forest in the continental U.S. The city sits at about 2,100 m (7,000 ft), beside Mount Elden and a short way south of the San Francisco Peaks, Arizona's highest range. Humphreys Peak, Arizona's highest point at 3,852 m (12,637 ft), rises about 16 km (10 miles) north of the city. Settlement of the present city began in 1876.

Many of Flagstaff's historic downtown buildings were built from red Moenkopi Formation sandstone that was once quarried in the city. Businessmen in town lobbied to bring Route 66 through, and it came, shifting the local economy from lumber to tourism and building up downtown. Downtown is a narrow, slender strip between the Museum of Northern Arizona to its north and the NAU campus to its south. It fell into disrepair in the 1970s and 1980s and was revived in the 1990s through a large cultural heritage project. Pluto was discovered from Lowell Observatory in 1930.
